Writing for an Academic Discussion

This week we are discussing how governments should respond to climate change. Some argue the most effective approach is to tax activities that produce carbon emissions, while others believe governments should instead invest heavily in developing clean-energy technology. In your view, which approach should governments prioritise, and why?

I think carbon taxes are the better tool. When pollution has a price, companies and individuals change their behaviour quickly because it hits their wallets. Investment in technology is slower and there is no guarantee it will pay off.

I disagree with Marco. Taxes place the heaviest burden on ordinary people who cannot easily afford alternatives. Governments should fund research into cheaper renewable energy so that the clean option becomes the affordable one for everyone.
