Writing for an Academic Discussion

A recurring debate in education is whether universities should require all students to take courses outside their major — for example, requiring a science student to study history or literature. Do you think such broad requirements are valuable, or should students focus only on their chosen field? Explain your reasoning.

Broad requirements waste time and money. If I am paying to become an engineer, every course should build toward that goal. Forcing me to take unrelated subjects only delays my degree and adds stress.

I see it differently. Employers value people who can think across disciplines. A literature course can sharpen an engineer's communication skills, and those skills matter as much as technical knowledge in the real workplace.
