IMAT scoring

Points, penalties and the decision to leave a blank

+1.5
correct
-0.4
wrong
90
maximum

The IMAT score is a simple sum: 1.5 points for every correct answer, minus 0.4 for every wrong answer, nothing for a blank. Every question is worth the same, whatever its area, and the maximum is 90.

A worked example

A candidate answers 40 questions correctly, gets 12 wrong and leaves 8 blank. The score is 40 × 1.5 = 60, minus 12 × 0.4 = 4.8, giving 55.2 points out of 90.

Guessing

With five options, a blind guess is worth very slightly less than a blank on average. Ruling out a single option is enough to make a guess worth more than a blank.Blind guess: 1.5 × 1/5 - 0.4 × 4/5 = -0.02 points. One option ruled out: 1.5 × 1/4 - 0.4 × 3/4 = +0.075 points.

An average is not a guarantee: several wrong guesses can cost more than one right guess earns. A sensible rule is to answer when you can eliminate at least one option and to leave the question blank when you cannot.

From points to a place

Places are allocated through national rankings drawn up from these points. The score that wins a place depends on how every candidate performed and on the places each university offers, so it differs between universities and from year to year. No practice test can predict it, and this site does not try.

What the practice test reports

Your raw points out of 90, the percentage of the maximum, and your correct, wrong and blank answers, followed by a review of every question with the worked solution and the reason the most tempting wrong option fails. Practice test.

Frequently asked questions

How is the IMAT scored?

Each correct answer earns 1.5 points, each wrong answer loses 0.4 points and a blank earns 0. With 60 questions the maximum is 90.

Should I guess on the IMAT?

A blind guess among five options gains 1.5 points one time in five and loses 0.4 points four times in five, an expected result of -0.02 points, so on average it is very slightly worse than a blank. Once you can rule out one option, the expected result turns positive (+0.075 points), and it grows with every option you eliminate.

What IMAT score do I need for a place?

There is no fixed score. Places are allocated through national rankings, and the score that wins a place depends on every candidate's result and on the places each university offers, so it changes every year.

What does the AxoPrep practice test report?
