TOEFL Listening
The Listening section was rebuilt on 21 January 2026. It is shorter, it adapts to your performance, and it uses four task types rather than the lecture-and-conversation pairing that ran for years. Most of the advice circulating online still describes the old section, including the replay questions, which no longer exist.
The section runs roughly 18 to 27 minutes. Because it is adaptive, the exact number of items differs from one candidate to another.
The four task types
Listen and Choose a Response

You hear a single short utterance — a question, a remark, a complaint — and choose the reply that fits. There is no passage to hold in memory and no notes to take. What is tested is whether you caught the intent of a sentence at conversational speed.
Conversation

Two speakers in a university setting: a student with an advisor, a librarian, a department administrator. The questions cover purpose, detail and what a speaker implies without stating.
Announcement
~1 minuteInformational monologue
A short notice of the kind a university actually issues — a service change, a closure, a deadline. Dense with specifics, and the questions target them: which service, which date, what happens after which hour.
Academic Talk
~2–3 minutesLecture extract
A section of a lecture on an academic subject. Shorter than the lectures of the old format, but the questions still reach beyond recall to the structure of the argument and the reason a point is raised at all.
How the adaptive stages work
Every candidate answers the same fixed first stage. Performance on that stage decides whether the second is drawn from an easier or a harder pool. It adapts once, between the two stages, rather than after every question.
The consequence is the same one that applies to the digital SAT. The stage you are routed into sets a ceiling on the band you can reach, because an easier pool does not contain questions demanding enough to demonstrate the top level. The opening minutes of the section therefore matter more than their share of the questions suggests.
The audio plays once
There is no replay. The old format included questions that repeated a short extract before asking about it, and those were removed in the redesign. Whatever you catch on the first and only playing is what you have.
This changes how note-taking works. With shorter clips and faster transitions, transcribing is no longer viable — by the time you have written a full phrase, the next point has gone. Short marks for numbers, names and the direction of an argument are worth more than sentences.
