What this practice test gives you

Every question is original and written to the published course framework, with four choices and one defensible answer. After you submit you see how many you got right, the percentage, and an explanation for every question that names the most tempting wrong answer. You do not get an AP score: the free-response section is not included and the College Board publishes no cut scores for its forms. Format and units.

Frequently asked questions

Why does this practice test have 62 questions instead of 70?

The real section has 62 single-select questions and 8 multiple-select questions, where you must choose two answers. This practice test includes only the single-select questions, so it has 62 questions in 106 minutes, the same time per question as 70 questions in 120 minutes. Multiple-select questions are not included.

Is the Create performance task included?

No. The Create performance task (your program code, video and personalized project reference) and the two written-response questions about it on exam day make up 30% of the AP score. They are not included here; this practice test covers the multiple-choice section only.

Is the AP Computer Science Principles exam digital?

Yes. The whole end-of-course exam is taken in the Bluebook app: the multiple-choice section and the two written-response questions, for which you may use your personalized project reference.

What programming notation do the questions use?

The text-based notation of the AP exam reference sheet: ← for assignment, DISPLAY, REPEAT n TIMES, REPEAT UNTIL, IF and ELSE, FOR EACH, PROCEDURE and RETURN, MOD for the remainder, and lists whose first element has index 1. The real exam supplies the reference sheet and also shows block-based code; here all code is text-based.

Which big ideas does AP Computer Science Principles multiple choice cover?

Five. Algorithms and Programming is the largest (30-35%), then Impact of Computing (21-26%), Data (17-22%), Computer Systems and Networks (11-15%) and Creative Development (10-13%). This practice test follows those weights: 20, 15, 12, 8 and 7 questions.

Can I use a calculator on AP Computer Science Principles?

No. Calculators are not allowed, so every calculation in the questions is small enough to do by hand, such as converting a binary number or tracing a short loop.

How many multiple-choice questions are on the AP Computer Science Principles exam?

The multiple-choice section has 70 questions in 120 minutes and counts for 70% of the exam score. This practice test has the 62 single-select questions in 106 minutes, the same time per question. The 8 multiple-select questions, where you choose two answers, are not included.

Does this practice test give me an AP score?

No. It reports how many questions you got right and the percentage. The AP score of 1 to 5 also depends on the free-response section, which is not included, and the College Board does not publish the cut scores for each form.

Is there a penalty for wrong answers?

No. AP multiple choice is scored on correct answers only, so answer every question.
