What this practice test gives you

Every question is original and written to the published course framework, with four choices and one defensible answer. After you submit you see how many you got right, the percentage, and an explanation for every question that names the most tempting wrong answer. You do not get an AP score: the free-response section is not included and the College Board publishes no cut scores for its forms. Format and units.

Frequently asked questions

How is the AP Computer Science A exam structured?

Two sections, both 90 minutes. Section I has 42 multiple-choice questions and counts for 55% of the score. Section II has four free-response questions in which you write Java code (methods and control structures, class design, data analysis with ArrayList, and a 2D array) and counts for 45%. This practice test covers Section I only.

Is the AP Computer Science A exam digital?

Yes. The whole exam is taken in the Bluebook app, including the free-response section, where you type your code.

What changed in the revised AP Computer Science A course?

From the 2025-26 school year the course has four units instead of ten, inheritance is no longer tested, and reading data from text files and working with data sets were added. The multiple-choice section went from 40 questions with five choices to 42 questions with four choices.

Which units does AP Computer Science A multiple choice cover?

Four. Data Collections (arrays, ArrayList, 2D arrays, text files, searching, sorting and recursion) is the largest at 30-40%, then Selection and Iteration (25-35%), Using Objects and Methods (15-25%) and Class Creation (10-18%). This practice test follows those weights: 15, 13, 8 and 6 questions.

Can I use a calculator or a reference sheet on AP Computer Science A?

No calculator is allowed. The Java Quick Reference is supplied: it lists the String, Math, Integer, Double, ArrayList, Object, File and Scanner methods the exam uses. Every question here stays within that list.

How many multiple-choice questions are on the AP Computer Science A exam?

The multiple-choice section has 42 questions in 90 minutes and counts for 55% of the exam score.

Does this practice test give me an AP score?

No. It reports how many questions you got right and the percentage. The AP score of 1 to 5 also depends on the free-response section, which is not included, and the College Board does not publish the cut scores for each form.

Is there a penalty for wrong answers?

No. AP multiple choice is scored on correct answers only, so answer every question.
